What is an imaginary number? It is any real number multiplied by \(i\) where \(i = \sqrt{-1}\). A big reason \(i\) is useful is because with it, all polynomials have a root. They make taking the square root or logarithm of negative numbers possible and more. In fact most functions have a natural extension to the complex domain.
These roots are known as complex (imaginary) roots. An example of a quadratic drawn on a coordinate plane with complex roots is shown in Figure 3. Notice that the vertex lies above the x-axis, and the end behavior on both sides of the graph is approaching positive infinity.
