Aug 21, 2023 · On July 17, 1932, the first stage (from London to Three Bridges) of the electrification of the Southern Railway main line between London and Brighton was opened to the public, and at 12.5 a.m. on New Year’s Day, 1933, the last steam operated passenger train left Victoria for Brighton.

The 12.03 to Brighton via Oxted and East Grinstead is headed by BR Standard 4MT 2-6-4T No. 80085, which was then brand-new from Brighton Works and allocated to Bletchley LMR.

Only because that class were often used on a handful of trains between London and Brighton via the Oxted line system into 1962. Quality mainly not that good, but I am pleased I have the photos. And I can just about remember taking those around Croydon in winter 1961/62.

By the 1930s there was an "Inner Circle" route where 20 trains a day ran via East Grinstead and then either Haywards Heath or Lewes down to Brighton, and an "Outer Circle" where 12 trains ran via Oxted and Eridge to Tunbridge Wells West.
