This design became EMD's standard until the FRA mandated the wide "safety" cab on every new locomotive in the 1990s. Interestingly, the GP30 abandoned EMD's brief attempt at attributing horsepower rating to the model name.

Here's a Georgia shortline that I don't think exist anymore. May 18, 1995 I found the Ogeechee RR SW8 102 near Perry Georgia. Then on January 5,1998 their GP30 4215 was working the yard at Ft. Valley Georgia.

The Chessie System rebuilt its GP30 units into GP30Ms, adding newer components, new traction motors and reducing their power to 2000 hp. They lasted with CSX into the mid-to-late 1990s. There are approximately 30 preserved units still operating in Museum and Shortline service.

5 days ago · EMD turbochargers are relatively expensive; I agree that a normally-aspirated GP9 in good condition would be a preferred shortline locomotive, rather than an GP30/35. "I'm a railroad man, not a prophet." GP30 locomotives had a very complex transition system.

The GP30 featured a unique cowl design and was the subject of a proper new model roll out at the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Michigan on October 18, 1961. EMD produced 948 GP30s during 1961-1963.
