Jul 17, 2018 · Finishes that form a film on top of the wood (paint, shellac, polyurethane, etc.) often clog sandpaper, so if you're using the sander on a large finished surface, you might want to consider other options (e.g. chemical stripper or scraping) to remove the finish before sanding. Woods that contain a lot of resin or oils can also build up easily.

Those spots typically means that you need to clean the paper a bit more often as you sand. What's happening is that the finish (and/or gunk) that you're sanding away is getting clogged in the pores of the sandpaper and is melting.

If your wood contains resin, you may face two problems: 1) the resin can clog the sandpaper (use saw blade resin cleaner to clean it), and 2) resin buildup on the paper can actually ignite burning a "nice" black line on your workpiece. The dust can ignite also. In general a drum sander is trickier to use and requires patience.

It's generally referred to as wet-and-dry, wet-n-dry or wet-or-dry paper (with or without the hyphens) as well as wet/dry paper. And note that 'sandpaper' is especially a misnomer here since this type of paper isn't, and has never been, made from sand.

Apr 24, 2015 · Scraper shavings are cleaner and safer than hand sanding dust. Ergonomics: holding scrapers by hand is much worse than hand sanding or an ROS. There are holders for rectangular scrapers that drastically improve the ergonomics, and then there are cabinet scrapers that are a real improvement.

Mar 19, 2017 · So it depends on the length of your sandpaper (a 1 inch piece of 80 grit sandpaper is going to cut less than a 10 inch piece per stroke, probably about 10:1 if I had to guess). But really sandpaper does not "cut", it more tears or smashes the wood fibers.
