    The preload is determined by the preload shim pack just behind the outer pinion bearing. The procedure would be to remove the old yoke, replace the seal (leaving everything else undisturbed), put the new yoke on the pinion shaft and replace the pinion nut. Torque the pinion nut to factory specs.

    This two seals look very much alike (although I don't have both on me at this time) and serve the exact same purpose. There both behind the flange/shield at the end of the drive shaft. Are they interchangeable?

    I am replacing the pinion seal on the 7-1/4 six cylinder differential. Discovered that the seal from RockAuto listing (8181NA) is completely wrong for the input shaft on my diff as the ID of the seal is way larger than the OD of the input shaft.

    I was speaking of the pinion shaft and output shafts (stub axles) seals, but haven't looked at the condition of the pinion shaft yet. That's a good idea to have the seal ride on a different part of the shaft.
