Big Boy Steam Locomotive - National Museum of Transportation
Known as a “Big Boy” because of its immense size and power, Union Pacific Railroad #4006 is one of the world’s largest successful steam locomotives. Built in 1941 by the American Locomotive Company at a cost of $265,000.00 and with a total weight of over 600 tons, Number 4006 is one of 25 Big Boys.

The "Big Boy" is an "articulated" engine that is 132 feet 9 1/4 inches long. It weighs 600 tons and could generate a speed of up to 80 mph. The Union Pacific railroad ordered 25 units and, of that number, seven are on static display and one has been restored and is fully operational.
