Jun 26, 2007 · Before the GPR, Lyman use to offer a Plains Rifle. I believe this rifle had a 1 in 48" twist in a shorter barrel (28" I think). The Lyman Trade Rifle now fills that void.

Feb 19, 2006 · The twist on the current production rifles is 1:60. Originally they were 1:66 but the rate changed sometime between 1985 and about 1996. All dates approximate. My rifle which dates to about 1981 has a 1:66. I'm not sure why they changed it, but it probably had something to do with production needs in the factory.

Sep 6, 2013 · Just bought a Lyman Plains (not Great Plains) .45cal sold as a kit way back when. Twist rateis 1:48 and been shooting .440 round balls with .017" striped patches and 40gr. triple 7. Accuracy is acceptable. Barrel slugs at .454"bore size and .462" groove size.

Jan 19, 2004 · I'm wondering if I can effectively shoot Lyman's 395 gr. 50 cal. Plains bullet in a barrel that has been designed for a round ball? Or, is a barrel with a faster rate of twist "absolutely" essential? I'll admit, I haven't shot the gun yet, so I have nothing to compare it too.

Sep 24, 2007 · My current rifle has the 1:60 twist, so I'm thinking of starting off the round ball shooting using 55 grains of FFFg Triple 7 and a .005 lubed patch, and working up towards 80 grains from there. Should I even try the maxi-balls again with such a slow twist rate?
