The history of the Jews in Ukraine dates back over a thousand years; Jewish communities have existed in the modern territory of Ukraine from the time of the Kievan Rus' (late 9th to mid-13th century).

In the wake of World War I and the 1917 Russian revolution, Jews in Ukraine were subject to one of worst massacres in Jewish history. As many as 100,000 were killed, raped and tortured over a period of several years, and many more were left homeless when their towns were burned.
