The plywood will bend a little (and/or you can shim it out as needed) to fit the wall so that the shelves will not have a big difference between them like they do now.

It was a real issue while we were working. The building was built in the 60s and the wall I'm using appears to be entirely plaster with no studs, no lath, nothing (as far as I can tell).

Feb 24, 2023 · Half of the people in first world countries (i.e. anyone that rents) is using shelves less strong than yours. As others have said, longer screws would be good. And, of course make sure your screws are going into studs or cross braces at the back. Turning your shelves into a bit of an I-beam (or L-beam) with a 3" face board will help with sag.

I'm planning on installing Ikea shelves mounted on wall brackets (using the Antonius system). Until recently there were Antonius shelves 14 3/8 inches deep, but now they've disappeared, leaving only 11 inches deep shelves. Otherwise, there are any number of kits available to order online or pick up at a local hardware store. I prefer the kind that use a flat nylon strap. Then you don't have to align everything perfect between wall and shelf.

Jul 5, 2022 · A hack is to lie it face down, make sure it's square, and bleed wood glue in around the edges of the back panel. Of course this is permanent. Another permanent hack is to nail into the back of a couple of shelves, in several places per shelf. But I've only had to do either of these on shelves that have been dismantled few times.
