Gray stain on oak - Woodworking Talk
Nov 22, 2017 · Materials included oil based paints, just about every gray stain I could find. 2 water based, 1 oil gel and 5 oil based stains. 5 different gray powered wood dyes mixed with water. Did not try any lacquer products, vinegar or ammonia. I was using red oak wood only which I think was the main problem.

Any of the dye stain you think you might keep for years I would transfer to a glass jar and shield the jar from light as much as possible. A dye stain is very similar to ink so you could go any color you want. You can use it alone or in conjunction with the stain you are using.

Aug 19, 2023 · Anyway it's not uncommon to use a pigmented stain and finish with a dye stain. The color of wood generally stains different colors and a dye stain can even it up a bit. You stain the wood and then shade over the light wood with a dye. I believe the wood you are using is maple. Maple is very prone to stain different colors even in the same board.

Jun 29, 2020 · I have sanded using 100 grit sandpaper and removed the prior stain and poly. I would like to try to preserve the natural look of the wood, but would also like to try to make the colors of each piece more uniform, as some pieces have a lighter color and others have more of a red-ish hue. So I was thinking of using a stain to bring them together.

They recommended the gel stain over the other methods because it doesn't penetrate deeply and will not be affected by the green tint. I have since used General Finishes Gel Stain on a couple of projects using poplar and I have been very satisfied.

Wait 3 minutes and, using a clean rag, wipe with the wood grain to remove the excess stain. 3. Allow to dry 8 to 10 hours. 4. To darken the color, apply additional coats of Gel Stain following the previous 3 steps.

Dec 29, 2021 · You can get the correct stain color but you can't make yellow pine look like poplar with stain. The distinct grain of yellow pine is going to show through. The only way to get even close is to paint the yellow pine an antique white color and do a wood graining on it. This is something a DIY really doesn't have the ability to do.

The drying is the only downside to the stain, and again it will depend upon the thickness and temperature/humidity of the room.

Jul 12, 2018 · The wood is (mostly) fir and the stain is an oil-based gel by General Finishes. (I only chose gel because I also need to stain the fiberglass door that is in the opening). The problem is that despite carefully conditioning the wood with about 1-1.25 lb cut of shellac the stain is still darker than the wood finish I had hope to achieve.
