Modifying the Eaton gov-lock G80 - S-10 Forum
Apr 23, 2010 · This is the part that controls when the lock-up disengages. I imagine one of these is for a heavier vehicle. To make the differential stay locked up past 20 mph you can shave weight off of this piece. I elected to leave it be since I don't need lock-up past 20mph anyway. Once it all gets put back together I'll post my findings on how well it works.

Mar 23, 2013 · The post and a Gov-lock. The RPO for the Gov-lock is G80 The Chevy 10 bolt rear end from my 1989 S-15 4X4 Jimmy is a 7.6" with an open diff. Note that 2-wheel drive rear ends are narrower than 4X4 rear ends. If you swapped this 8.8 rear end into your 2wd, the wheels would stick out further.

Jun 23, 2020 · Eaton themself refers to the Gov-Lock by the G80 RPO code. The actual name for this reared has changed over the years, but it has never been "Gov-Lock" or "governor lock." "The Eaton ADL is sometimes incorrectly called the "Gov-Lok", despite neither GM nor Eaton ever calling it by that name.

Nov 14, 2012 · Good quick mod to a stock 10 bolt 7.5/7.625 G80 Gov Lock converting it into a Traction Lock style posi. First remove the governor assy. Gut the carrier. On the large end you want to remove the C-clip and wave spring that sits inbetween the clutch plates. This will give you room to add another clutch plate.

Feb 18, 2008 · the new GM rear fluid has the additive already installed. I was told this by my local dealer when I had rear end trouble with my 01 2500HD. It would not unlock. Took it to the dealer and they said I had to change the fluid. They gave me the 4 qts of fluid and I asked about the additive since I had a LSD. He said it was already in the bottles.

May 11, 2021 · I went with the 8.6 that was an option in some S10's. I had two one had the gov-lock, the other an open diff. Sold the one with gov-lock, buying a tru-trac for the open diff. The 8.5 / 8.6 are getting hard to find but I did find one last year out of a ZR2, which is wider than 2wd.

At the time, the Eaton, gears, and bearings were almost $1k. Broke the ring and pinion twice. Jun 13, 2006 · Early ZR2's did not come standard with the G80 Gov-lock. Sometime around 97 or 98 this changed, and from then on all trucks were so equipped stock. As someone mentioned above, check the sticker in your glove box... you'll see G80 as one of the many codes listed.

Unlike the Gov-Loc, a Powertrax No Slip locks up solid when driving in a straight line so like all locking differentials, it is a little tricky to drive on icy or wet pavement where the rear tires may encounter different traction.
