Nov 15, 2021 · Sure. But I don't see why you couldn't make a front engined road car with central seating, whether front- or rear wheel drive. I think the reason why nobody has (afaik), is that it wouldn't be very practical for most cars. The main application for a central driving position is for uncompromising drivers cars, practicality be damned.

Nov 26, 2020 · And for passenger vehicles that sit lower and are rear wheel drive, that middle space makes the perfect place to run the transmission and driveshaft to the back, right down the centerline. It may also complicate designing the steering system under the hood to have the connecting shaft running down the middle of it.

Dec 7, 2022 · Because then the driver would have to sit in the middle, which leaves them sitting on top of the hump created by the engine and trans and competing heavily for room. In fact the drivetrain itself would be in the way for connecting the steering wheel to the steering gear, even if it was a front wheel drive with no trans tunnel to worry about.

Feb 9, 2022 · The steering wheel in the middle of a regular car would result in only one person fitting in the front room compared to two today. That is a major drawback and I doubt many people would consider that triad work it even if the car handling and visibility were improved a bit.

Something else to add, even though it's been answered, in my '06 Dodge Charger, I have an extra stick around my wheel I've never seen in other cars, and it's my cruise control, instead of buttons on the wheel, it's a stick on the left hand side of my steering wheel. I know this isn't what you're asking of, but I thought it'd be cool to add.
