Best answer: I'm not sure if bean patties/cakes are far enough from standard for you, but they're delicious. Here is a version with Mexican flavors. It calls for coarsely mashed beans, but I've found you can use pureed also (might need a bit more egg/cornmeal/flour/etc.).
