The Davidson Tartan was adopted as the tartan to be worn by the 48th Highlanders of Canada on its inception in 1891. It is in honour of the first Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel John Irvine Davidson.

A tartan, The Old Davidson, and a falcon’s head for the regimental crest honour the first Commanding Officer, John Irvine Davidson. The original full dress Scarlet uniform is still worn today. Reserve soldiers train to the combat-ready status of the full-time soldier. At home they create a strong link with the local community.

The 48th Regiment (Highlanders) were disbanded for the purpose of reorganization on 1 March 1921 and reorganized the same day (GO 133/21). This change was administrative and does not affect the lineage of the regiment.

The falcon’s head is adopted from the crest of the chief of the Clan Davidson, the regiment’s first commanding officer being Lieutenant-Colonel John Irvine Davidson, and the predominant colours of red and blue are from the Davidson tartan that the regiment wears.

From 1891 and to this day, scarlet doublets and feathered bonnets, based on historic Scottish infantry uniforms, have identified the 48th Highlanders of Canada on formal parades. Leading them on parade are the Pipes and Drums with the regimental pipers in Stuart of Fingask tartan.
