Another is the Great Weapon Master feat. This lets you reroll the first 1 or 2 on a damage roll with a weapon that has the Heavy trait (greatsword, maul, etc), and use the replacement roll. So if you swing a greatsword for 2d6 and get a 1 and a 4, you'd reroll that 1, but only once per attack.

In the end its all about preferences and if you like D100 for its looting for example, or 4AD for it "squad based system", there is nothing wrong with it.

In a vacuum, 2d6 will average out to higher damage, making it the clear winner. Dec 5, 2016 · Normally though a maul with 2d6 works better with fighters and low level barbarians. Fighters can pick up great weapon fighting which can reroll 1s, so you will consistently do higher damage with 2d6 and until non half orc barbarians get brutal critical there isn't much reason to not use 2d6 for the pure reason of a higher average damage.
