Aug 14, 2023 · Compared to Jedidiah, Prairie Creek, and Humboldt Redwoods, I think Del Norte Redwoods (i.e. the Damnation trail) is the least impressive, so if it's someone's first trip and time is limited, I recommend making that park a lower priority than the others. I could see why my notes confuse the park vs the county.

Feb 18, 2021 · See Howland Hills Road and Hwy 199 through the park, definitely see Stout grove (easy, short trail to one of the most beautiful redwood groves anywhere), and maybe hike the Mill creek or Boy Scout Trails. Then at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park take the Newton B Drury hwy, there are quite a few hiking trailheads on it.

I camped at Gold Bluffs campground in Prairie Creek several years ago before they accepted reservations. I'd be camping alone this time (I'm a woman).

Prairie Creek Redwood State Park (this state park and Del Norte and Jed Smith are managed together with Redwood, so your pass applies, etc). Lots of elk, Fern Canyon (one of the best hikes in the region), great redwoods. Note you need a permit to go over to Gold Bluffs, but the western trailhead is closed now due to flooding.

May 21, 2018 · Only slightly less great is Prairie Creek SP right next to Redwood National Park. Once again it’s filled with old growth redwoods and incredibly lush. Humboldt comes in 3rd for me, still a great park, the trees are just as impressive but the forest floor isn’t as lush and impressive.
