Surgeons maintain that ankle replacement is only for older people on the basis that the implant has limited life of say 10 years and cannot be revised, so when it is finished you can only have a fusion. However, 10 years is a rolling average spanning several generations of implant, which have improved substantially.

Feb 3, 2016 · I came out of plaster after 8 weeks after ankle fusion operation. 2 weeks in I am unable to completely weight bear, and cannot wear the boot longer than 15 mins before foot starts to feel like burning, then swelling starts, making walking in the boot unbearable.

Apr 20, 2017 · I work full time and my orthopaedic consultant said I would need N ankle fusion after an unsuccessful steroid injection under ultrasound. He said it would be 3 months in plaster non weight bearing then months in a boot . 12-18 months recovery. I won't receive sick pay for that length of time and would lose my job.

I had an ankle fusion Aug 19 .. it failed. I did everything right after the op, non smoker, not diabetic,.. the 2 main risk factors! I was due a second op in April then Lockdown happened! I was at rock bottom, living with pain not knowing if I would get better and then Covid! I had a revision ankle fusion with a bone graft this August.

Jun 14, 2017 · Hi.I had a right ankle fusion last August.I was in a cast and then a boot for sometime but I can say definitely that a fusion does not prevent you from driving a manual gearbox car.In fact I would say that driving is easier than walking.As long as you are happy to do an emergency stop you will be able to drive.Good luck with your healing and keep looking forward to the day when you feel ready ...
