Aug 23, 2020 · A software upgrade could not have made the soundbar eARC compatible. eARC is exclusive to HDMI 2.1 due to the high-bandwidth requirements. Also for gaming, at least for now, you're probably not going to need eARC for anything at all. eARC is primarily for 192khz audio from uncompressed data streams. This is also known as Hi-Res Audio.

Ideally if your TV and receiver have eARC, or you have an HDMI 2.1 receiver with the Xbox connected to it, you would simply select 5.1 uncompressed. But if the TV has eARC and the receiver only has ARC, then 5.1 LPCM isn’t possible because ARC only supports stereo LPCM.

Dec 1, 2015 · ^^^ yep. But keep in mind that ARC is limited to 5.1 audio just like optical. It can't send HD Audio (DTS-MS, Dolby TrueHD, etc). The only advantage of ARC is that it eliminates the optical cable. ARC is also associated with CEC (both are HDMI mediated) and there are lots of issues with CEC which can carryover to ARC.
