The memorial, erected in 1987 by Welsh sculptor David Petersen, is a Welsh red dragon on top of a three-metre stone plinth, facing the wood and tearing at barbed wire. It was commissioned by the South Wales Branch of the Western Front Association following a public fund-raising appeal.

This stunning Welsh dragon memorial overlooks the area where the 38th (Welsh) Division attacked Mametz Wood between 7 th and 14 th July 1916. The wood was eventually cleared by 14 th July but at a cost of over 4,000 British casualties.

The 38th Welsh Division memorial is located to the north-east of Mametz village, and on the south side of Mametz Wood (Bois de Mametz).

Jul 21, 2016 · The 38th Welsh Division entered the fray on the morning of 7th July, their objective to capture the section of the wood known as the Hammerhead (above), and this is the view the Welsh would have had as they descended the slope on which the dragon now stands (below) to attack the wood.

Designed by Welsh sculptor David Peterson, the memorial features a Welsh Dragon ripping through barbed wire facing in the direction of Mametz Wood. The memorial lies just north of the Village of Mametz, and can be reached by following the Chemin des Gallois or, in English, the Welshman’s Path.

Inaugurated on July 11, 1987, the monument to the 38th Welsh Division features a red dragon, the emblem of Wales. With its wings in motion, it holds barbed wire in its claws as it heads towards Mametz wood, a reminder of the fierceness of the fighting.
