He puts this up at the start of the fight and periodically throughout the fight, and if you melee him with it up, you can nearly kill yourself instantly on it (I did three times because of fast attack speed and not knowing it was thorns.).

On the Epic difficulty I recommend to use the Greater Scroll of the Crushing Vortex in your fight against Typhon. After the scroll effect ends, you can escape from the circle to the staircase and wait there until you can use new scroll.
