The Elkmont Rural Village was the first planned Village and operates under the Alabama Elk River Development Agency. In addition to being the owner and managing body of the Elkmont Rural Village, AERDA also operates as a developer of the surrounding area.

Located in the Elkmont Rural Village is a maternity cave home to roughly 5,000- 10,000 federally protected Gray Bats Myotis grisescens. AERDA continues to partner with the US Fish and Wildlife Service to maintain our enclosure while protecting this endangered species.

Sulphur Creek Trails - AERDA
Located within the Elkmont Rural Village are the Sulphur Creek Trails. This roughly 20 mile trail system includes a paved walking trail, a green walking trail, various primitive hiking trails, and picturesque horse riding trails.
