Coolangatta was gazetted in 1883. The town was settled in the Bundjalung traditional Aboriginal country, the Yugambeh language and people are the local custodians. Surveyor Henry Schneider gave Coolangatta its name while surveying the land in 1883. It originated from the Coolangatta Schooner, which was wrecked on 18 August 1846 at Kirra Beach.
