Feb 21, 2006 · The owners manual of my new '06 FXP calls for specific ATF, including Subaru ATF-HP, Idemitsu ATF-HP, Castrol Transmax J or Pennzoil ATF-J, none of which I can find. In fact my local dealer did not know it existed. The -HP atf has been a spec for the 5EAT for a while, but is new for my 4EAT for '06. Previous models were OK to use Dexron III.

Feb 17, 2010 · Subaru HP is a dealer-only item. Hassle factor. Expensive dealer prices. I'd much rather use something readily available at discount prices from parts stores, Wally's, etc. Valvoline says their Dex VI is synthetic, ditto for their MaxLife ATF. I know the Maxlife works well in a 4EAT. Just windering about the Dex VI.

Jan 7, 2006 · HP has different frictional properties than Dexron III. Previously, Dexron was required for 4-speed automatics and HP for 5-speed automatics. Our engineers found that the properties of HP worked better with the clutch materials in the 5-speeds. For 2006, HP is required for all transmissions.

Use of conventional or synthetic is up to the owner but Subaru always uses conventional. HP has different frictional properties than Dexron III. Previously, Dexron was required for 4-speed automatics and HP for 5-speed automatics.

Dec 15, 2015 · The owners manual states that I can use Subaru ATF, Idemitsu HP, or Dexron III in the power steering fluid. The cap on the reservoir states to use Dexron III. I e-mailed Subaru to ask, and they are also stating that the vehicle came with Dexron III. So, all signs are pointing to the fact that I should use Dex III in the PS.

Jan 21, 2024 · Dexron III ATF was discontinued about ten years ago and it's successor was Dexron VI ATF, which was then superseded by Dex-Merc and others: "Dex/Merc ATF is the automatic transmission fluid that has been uniquely engineered to meet and exceed the requirements automatic transmissions in vehicles that specify Dexron-III fluids."

If you have auto trans, definitely make sure to know whether it needs the Subaru/Idemitsu HP-ATF or if it can run Dexron III. Running Dexron ATF in a soob 5EAT trans that requires Idemitsu can result in some weird shifting/shuddering feelings.

Feb 3, 2010 · "Dexron" is a GM trademark and was designed for GM transmissions. Dexron III has been superceded by Dexron IV and is no longer supported by GM. The latter is backward compatiable, though. I use Mobil 1 Multi-Vehicle Full Synthetic ATF because it's easy to find at my local auto supply shop and is compatible with Subaru transmissions.
