In chronic kidney disease (CKD), the clinical diagnosis of metabolic acidosis is typically made when serum bicarbonate level decreases to <22 mEq/L.
Major complications associated with metabolic acidosis in CKD include increased muscle wasting, bone disease, and, possibly cardiovascular disease and increased mortality.26 In children, metabolic acidosis impairs growth by inhibiting the secretion of growth hormone (GH) and decreasing its activity in peripheral tissues.29,30
