Oct 21, 2014 · Back before the "tactical knife" fad starting around 1980 something, Case included sharpening instructions with every knife they sold. "Hold the knife 10 degrees to the sharpening stone ..." 20 degrees inclusive was the "normal" edge angle for a knife. I believe my circa 1978~1986 Old Timer 858 has a 10DPS factory edge.

Jan 22, 2017 · The knife doesn't have to have a polished edge. A good knife steel should hold up for dressing and skinning out one deer but it never hurts to have a small pocket sharpener to touch up the edges if needed. Unless the knife has a very good steel it will tend to dull faster if you put too much of a fine edge angle on it.

Oct 15, 2014 · Knife thicknes causes angle to be added: say 15 goes to 17 deg. Oposite goes for: there is a guide, then the knife leaned on it and the sharpening surface is on the oposite side of the guide. Knife between them moves its center closer to the sharpener. e.g. 15 deg becomes 13.

I love my benchmades but man is it a pain to have to reprofile EVERY new benchmade knife I get. They could really use a few people with a better understanding of edge geometry doing their sharpening.

Aug 18, 2002 · Just remember, only when using the EdgePro, that the angles they use are not exactly the same as if you were to measure an actual blade. Example. After researching the angle that other Opinel users recommend, and lets say that is 15°. To get that exact angle, you would have to set the Edge Pro to 17° for the reason I explain in my post ^^^^.

Jul 10, 2014 · with the edge pro apex i will use a 600grit stone and sharpie to match the existing bevel, then remove the knife, lay the stone on the table edge and set the target angle. when i change stones i lay it on the table, adjust to hit the target angle, then continue with sharpening.
