The San Francisco 49ers are gearing up for the 2025 NFL season, with Kyle Shanahan poised to bring in a controversial figure as the new defensive coordinator.

The 49ers defensive scheme is somewhat outdated. They're still running the same defensive scheme that the Seahawks ran 10 years ago under head coach Pete Carroll. The Seahawks don't even run this scheme anymore.

The 49ers are hoping to keep Sorensen around on Kyle Shanahan's staff in a lesser role, just not as the defensive play-caller. Sorensen has spent the last three years in the organization, holding titles of defensive assistant, defensive passing game coordinator and nickelback coach before being named defensive coordinator prior to last season.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan said at a Wednesday press conference that Kubiak will be the team’s offensive coordinator. Kubiak was the team’s offensive passing game specialist in 2024 and an assistant quarterbacks coach for the two previous seasons.
