The University of Houston is set to ban TikTok, alerting those on campus that the popular video social media app will be outlawed from its network in the new year. University of Houston educators, staff and students received a memo from the university system on Wednesday,

The University of Houston announced on Monday that TikTok will be banned on the school’s network starting in the new year. Starting on Jan. 3, 2025, the school will “begin blocking” the Chinese-owned video-sharing platform in addition to other prohibited technologies and applications in accordance with an executive order by Gov.

The university had already banned employees from using the app on school-owned and operated devices, but starting Jan. 3, students and staff will not be able to use or download the app on the university network.

The move comes in response to Texas Governor Greg Abbott's 2022 directive ordering all state agencies to ban select technologies and apps, including TikTok.
