Hi, I did not visit all the island. I cannot really tell you if San Vito lo Capo is the best place to stay. It depends on what you are interested in. San Vito has a very nice beach and good places to have dinner too. I really enjoyed it. But even more I liked Cefalu. If you get an hotel a couple of miles out of downtown Cefalu, wiht beach access...so calm and beautiful. So, it is hard to tell. I cannot answer about traveling to Trapani from Perugia, I haven't been there. To travel around the island, for me the best way is rented car. it gives you the freedom to decide. Be aware to rent a small one. Sometimes the streets are very, very narrow. Hope you find this helpful. Regards and enjoy Sicily.
