The Pearce Institute (the “PI”) stands on the north side of Govan Road, only a few yards from Govan Cross and adjacent to Govan Old Church. The Institute was completed in 1906 and was gifted to the people of Govan by Lady Pearce in memory of her husband, Sir William Pearce, former owner of the Fairfield shipyard and Govan’s first MP. Throughout its history, the PI has been of immense significance to the people of Govan, due to the social, cultural, educational and sporting activities for which it has provided a home. Built over three floors it provides extensive and diverse space for community activities, functions, services and events. Architecturally, it is an A-listed building and is considered one of the best examples of architects’ use of the “Scottish style”.
