Do you have to purchase a ticket ahead of time, or can you buy it there?

We went into ticket office previous day. We chose entry time as early as possible to avoid queues but soon gets busy. As a treat we recommend visiting the pump room for afternoon tea.
Do they allow re-entry? We have a reservation for tea that will cut our visit short so we would love to be able to go back in after tea.
