Book in advance online. Arriving late for your time slot wasn't an issue for us. Be prepared to pay for parking and bring a mask if needed since the sulfur smell can be a lot. If you're sensitive, pl… Full review by 915mollieb

So lucky and the clouds at the volcano parted as arrived for a couple minutes. Nice exhibit about the volcanos and a shop/snack place. The trails were closed due to recent rains and mudslides. I'm… Full review by Laura L

Q:
Do you need a 4x4 to handle the road there, or is a regular car okay?
A:
Regular car is ok, is in good condition. Just be careful with the turns, is a winding road.

A question to those who bought tickets on the day from a stand/ shop on the way up. That sounds like a good idea as you’ll have a better idea of the weather (an I correct in that or is it impossible to tell until you’re actually at the volcano itself?) Also if you do buy from here do they always have tickets available and is it still the same time slots that are online? Thanks
A:
Yes, they always have tickets just make sure you bring your passport. If you don't have it they can't sell you tickets. We hired a private car and driver it sat 8 people and cost $150, it …

We hired a private car and driver it sat 8 people and cost $150, it was well worth it enable to make stops along the way, then we dropped a couple at the airport and then back to our hotel downtown San Jose.

We (two seniors and a teenager) will be arriving in San Jose by car about noon on Friday the 8th of November after several days near Manuel Antonio. thought we could spend the afternoon seeing the Poas volcano, then return to San Jose for our last night in Costa Rica (leaving Saturday on a 2:15 flight) . IS that doable? Would it be better to spend the night near the volcano and just go straight to the airport on Saturday? Thanks for any input

Hi, we went in July to Poas, it was “ok”. Due to the eruptions a year or so ago, trails are closed, the restaurant was closed, I guess there’s a small gift shop, it was closed too. We had good views, but not sure I would go back. They recommend you go early for views, gets cloudy and overcast in the afternoon. We walked up to the volcano, spent the allowed 30 mins and left. It’s not too far from San Jose, we always stay in Alajuela, it’s closer to Poas. If you have time, I’d recommend La Paz waterfall park instead of Poas. If you’re driving allow a lot of time, traffic and roads will keep you on your toes. BTW, Poas has been closed the last few days or weeks (not sure), they hope to have it open again this week I think.
