Yeah, there a lot of public transport but it might be costly if you went there alone, because the last time i went there was at 3 AM by small mini bus. As for the stay i prefer that if you stay in the hotel near the town, it's not that far really and you'll get more comfortable place to rest also. Because most of Indonesia homestay or hostel aren't too good, and the price for staying in a 3 star hotel is just maybe 30$ you can get less though in a 2 star hotel for 20 - 25$. Just my opinion though.
