The Old Exchange is established as one of three most historic buildings in Colonial America. Delegates to the Continental Congress were elected in this building. The United States Constitution was ratified upstairs in the great hall. The declaration of Independence was read publicly to the citizens of Charleston in 1776. During British occupation from 1780 to 1782 the cellar of the building was used as a prison earning it the infamous nickname "The Dungeon." during his 1791 southern tour President George Washington was entertained in great style at the building. The Old Exchange Building became the economic social and cultural center of a bustling South Carolina colony.

Someone said you really don't have to pay admission to visit this. The $10 was for the tour. Is this true? If we don't pay are there things to read explaining things? I did read on the website that the self guided tour only includes the top 2 floors and not the dungeon. Anyone have experience with this?

We paid the $10 which included the dungeon tour. The self guided part still required the $10 admission to get in and see the two upper floors.
