We had hoped to ride behind a 1909 steam locomotive but it developed a mechanical defect and a diesel was substituted. The ride through the Arizona desert was pleasant, colors were starting to change… Full review by C2765JXalexs

If you visit their web site you will see a variety of offerings of special trips and also regular daily trips. We wanted to do the star viewing night trip and all the reservations were taken a year out. We were told that they might have standby seating available and so we took the chance to show up with no reservation. We arrived about 15 minutes before departure and were told they had two spots we could have so we paid our ticket fee and went. So I think the best plan is to have a reservation but if it looks sold out don't despair. Give it a shot. The next night we had a reservation on the Sunset, stars and campagne trip and that was fine.
Q:
Is the train handicap accessible?
A:
Yes, the train is handicap accessible. Please arrive 45 minutes prior to departure and let the conductor know so we can make arrangements.

I see some people have said the train runs during a new moon, for no light pollution, but it actually runs each Friday from May-August. Can someone clarify that? If the moon is full or high in the sky, does it affect the viewing in the national park?

Tracy, due to the popularity of the Star Trains we now operate every Friday night in 2020 from mid-May through mid-September. On occasion there will be a full moon, we don't consider that to be light pollution since it is a celestial body. There are a lot of variables in play here most of which Mother Nature controls from possible clouds on the viewing night to where the moon. planets and stars are in their respective obit. And for clarification the train does not go to the park. We bring the rangers to the train.
Q:
Is the “star train” still active? I can’t find information on it anywhere. Thanks
