Yes. Exclusive to Pichavaram is not worth. You may want to club with something like we did a east coast tour in Dec covering Pichavaram, Chidambaram, Pondy and Chennai. Pichavaram is worth seeing but definitely don't do it any later than Feb unless you want get some hard tan!!
Have they re opened the longer 4 hour boat tours or is it still just one hour tours?

Actually they will not take you more than half an hour. Depends on the person. The person we took put some additional time( one hour) and effort taken us inside beautiful tunnel.
