The hike itself is beautiful, with a lot to take in, but the terrain puts a whole different spin on it. It is very rocky in a lot of spots. You can manage it, but beware. It is not an easy trail. … Full review by gotoAZ86

We went up on the first tram of the day in fear of it being too hot to walk this trail, but it wasn't uncomfortable to walk around in. Be prepared for the air to become a bit thinner the higher up yo… Full review by fieldsaflame

Be in good shape and altitude acclimated prior to going up the La Luz. Great switchbacks and wonderful views of ABQ along the way and from the top (where there's a good restaurant). Don't try the e… Full review by 103alw
Is there any place to stay at the top? I have a conference until Sunday noon in January and am hoping to hike to the top, stay and hike down on Monday morning. Is that a reasonable plan??

There's a restaurant at the top but no place to stay. Recommendation; hike to the top, take the tram back down to your vehicle. BUT: please be aware that there will be snow and certainly ice on the hike to the top and that micro-spikes are necessary. It's about 13.5 miles so will take about 7 hours - so you'll be hiking in the dark the way you have it planned. I could not recommend hiking the higher elevations on ice with a narrow trail and precipitous drops in the dark. Maybe an out and back from the bottom would be a better choice.
We are planning a trip to the area in Feb. How accessible and hikable are the trails in the Sandia Mts that time of year?

Hi, glad you’re coming to see our beautiful state and getting out to hike. I hike in the Sandias all year round, but I grew up in Minnesota. Please keep in mind that the sandías at the top have an elevation of 10,300 feet, so bring good boots and gloves because it gets cold and windy up there. Do not bring running shoes or sneakers. Boots, preferably with Vibram soles. There will be snow up there, but it will be beautiful and the trails are pretty well groomed, but it can be a little rocky. But if you hike after 11:00 am, it will be sunny, crisp, and beautiful. Have fun!!

There are 2 choices. You can start at the tram and take a trail 2 miles that connects to the LaLuz then head up from there. Or, you can go to the formal trailhead which is off tramway. Going north on tramway, go past the stop sign where you would turn right to go to the tram. Continue on tramway and take the first right turn onto a paved road that winds up toward the Sandia's. As you approach where the pavement ends, there are 2 large stone pillars, turn right and continue up the winding road until you reach the parking lot.
