I mean, it's a tall tower that overlooks Knoxville. It's pretty cool. Great views, of course, and an interesting history behind it. It's worth the time and money to go up it. Full review by Daniel L

According to three sources, it closed in March 2017. They still use a floor for private parties, according to that article. The SunSphere is very small so the management realized it was not cost effective. We were there in Sept during a Sunday and the area was empty. No tourist around at all. Two other web sites said it was also closed for good. It has a nice view up there, but you need customers.

Yes, to get inside it is free and the observation deck is also free. I believe there was a restaurant on one of the levels, which obviously would cost you, and you might have to pay for parking nearby to check this out, but the parking garages are pretty reasonable pricing. Overall, yes this attraction is free.
