We visited in July. Loved it. Saw re enactment with the trains and spike. 150th anniversary year. Walked the Big Fill Loop Trail and took one of the auto tours. The longer one was closed. Wondered if it was open now as we plan to visit again this year.

My wife and I also visited last year (150th Anniversary Year). We drove the shorter East Auto Route and did the Big Fill Trail. Enjoyed our visit very much. Your best bet to find out about the longer West Auto Route is to call the park and ask them. They should be able to give you accurate information.

No interactive exhibits, depends on the child if it holds their attention, yes you can see the engines close up, yes you can get in without a high clearance vehicle, allow at least an hour.

There are several displays and interactive learning experiences that are perfect for younger children. The live demonstrations from the steam locomotive are great for kids from 2 to 92. For the 150th week they had dozens of extra displays depicting life from 1860's that are for younger kids. Hope this helps.

The engine house was open when we were there 3/31/19 and the staff was polishing brass, getting ready for 5/10/19, 150 th anniversary of the golden spike. I think it closes at 4 PM. I’m not sure it is always open, you could call the visitor center and ask.
