Rented a 4 wheel drive Jeep for the trip. It seems everyone is hung up on if a 2 wheel drive car can make it , versus the incredible landscape and views. Im sure my Ford Explorer would have made it, … Full review by Kurt S

Hello Universe! I'm a good driver and have experience traversing rough terrain in 2WD vehicles... And still, there is nothing worse (or more stupid) than pressing your luck in the great outdoors! With that said, I have seen a lot of mixed reviews on the matter, so just how necessary is a 4WD vehicle for tackling the Road to Cathedral Valley Loop? It looks like there's at least one river crossing with Fremont, but the road itself doesn't look like anything I haven't done in a Hyundai before. Am I under-selling the road conditions here? Many thanks! ~Excited First Timer in Capitol Reef

The part I would worry about would be the river crossing. The depth of the water is the concern for any vehicle depending on the current conditions of the the river. Beyond that, the road is very rough in places and there are several arroyo crossings. If there is any threat of rain the road would be bad or impassible in places. I recommend that you purchase the guide brochure from the park's visitor center. It has good descriptions of the road and what you will see along the way. Happy exploring!

As with most landscape areas sunrise and sunset offer the best photo opportunities. Since traveling the loop takes 6-9 hours depending on how long you stop for, it is obviously not possible to be everywhere in perfect conditions. The Temples of the Sun and Moon and the Cathedrals are very photogenic at sunrise and sunset, but being at them for either will involve driving in or out on the back dirt roads in twilight or darkness. Driving unfamiliar dirt roads in low light may be unnerving if you are not used to it and you will miss the scenery you are traveling through!

Q:
I've seen time estimates of 5 hours. If you don't get stuck in the snow, how long does the loop take?
A:
Five hours would be a fairly quick loop, I drive tours around the loop and typically take 8 hours (Torrey to Torrey) including a short lunch break. Just the dirt section takes about 6 …

Hi! Thanks for ytour review! I was just wondering if your assurance with the rented car would have covered for a problem happening on this road?
A:
I'm not sure who you are asking with this question but in general rental car insurance does not cover driving on dirt roads.
