The trails are smooth and paved. We had no problem there. The challenge was the many steps (ie as in short stairs) throughout though we (74 years) did it slowly and managed. There were handrails in most areas which helped. Also the steps are well designed ie not high. There may be rougher trails off the usual paths but we did not go off the main areas so I can’t comment on those. But the main areas are fine. If you visit 2 or 3 areas each day be prepared to walk 15000 to 20000 steps (level and up and down steps)

Any time of the year is good to travel as the sceneries varies according to each season; so your experience cannot be compared with another. However I travelled in summer. This tour can be done by yourself at a very economical rate, however you can get guidance from a local tour guide. I suggest you do that, to save time and money. I got help from “Zhangjiajie Kangtai” they are really good service providers

We had a private tour at zjj, there is much to see and not enough time. There were very few western tourists, mostly chinese tourist. We got most of our information from chinahighlights looking up zjj national park. They have the best written information about zjj, what to see, how to allocate time, tips on avoiding crowds, how to get there, best time to visit where to stay and eat ( see my reviews), entry fees, attraction fees. Have a great time.
Is it possible to buy the tickets for Zhangjiajie National Forest Park - in advance - from your hotel? Do you need to provide your original passport to buy the tickets from hotel?

Maybe possible, but most likely not easy. It is easy at the gate to get tickets, and showing a passport is necessary for the purchase. We bought our ticket a little later on the first day, as it soon gets quieter after the first rush and there are plenty of easy destinations so as not to feel that the day is wasted.
